Professional Domain Registration and Maintenance |
| An Overview of the domain name system |
The Internet operates by assigning IP (Internet Protocol) addresses to each host/client on the network. The IP address of this machine is 212.140.242.213 and your current IP address is 38.103.63.56. These IP Addresses are not very easy to remember or use, and that's where domain names come into the picture. The domain name for this site is www.gendomain.net which as you can see is made from three parts, separated by a dot (.). Domains resolve from the right to left, so in this case....
When your browser converts www.gendomain.net into 212.140.242.203 it will use 3 DNS Servers to achieve this. The first is the root server which is responsible for the TLDs, the second is responsible for the gendomain part, and finally GENs DNS is responsible for the www. This very simple system of servers handles billions of requests each day for every website that is browsed to every email that is sent at least two DNS servers are involved, and the importance of stable and resilient DNS cannot be over stressed. As we've seen in our example, the last (and most important) part of DNS resolution is handled by your ISPs server, and all good business ISPs have reasonable DNS provisions for their customers. There are however a far larger number of budget or consumer ISPs whose DNS is not so bright on the stability horizon. |
| Its all about control |
| When you entrust your hosting or email to an
ISP, you also entrust the management of your domain name. Should that ISP
fail to perform in some provision of service, then you are left having to
find another ISP to host your services and your domain name. This can be
time consuming and fraught with problems.
With GENDomain, your domain is not only ISP independent, but so is your complete DNS resolution, meaning that you have COMPLETE CONTROL over where your website and email are hosted, with the ability to switch ISPs at your sole discretion. You can even have one ISP handling your email and another handling your web hosting and even multiple ISPs responsible for your services with redundancy. And we provide all of these services inclusive with your domain registration charge. |
| There's More... |
| At the heart of a DNS Server is a bunch of 'zone files'. Each domain name has its own zone file which contains all the configuration information for that domain name. GENDomain.net gives you COMPLETE ACCESS to your own zone file providing unrestricted configuration of your domain's functionality. We also provide a 'standard' interface for changing key items in the zone file for people who don't want to learn about zone file configuration in detail. |
