An Overview of the domain name system

The Internet operates by assigning IP (Internet Protocol) addresses to each host/client on the network. The IP address of this machine is 212.140.242.213 and your current IP address is 38.103.63.56. These IP Addresses are not very easy to remember or use, and that's where domain names come into the picture.

The domain name for this site is www.gendomain.net which as you can see is made from three parts, separated by a dot (.). Domains resolve from the right to left, so in this case....

  1. net = the TLD (or Top Level Domain)
  2. gendomain = our companies domain name
  3. www = the name of the current computer which is hosting this domain
